About Inner Twitter

Where the Inner Twitter idea comes from, who runs the site today, how the chime timer works, what it does with your data, and what it is not: medical advice or X.

Inner Twitter is a free browser tool for mindful pauses, with a few short guides. You choose a time window and how many chimes you want, and the timer plays a soft bell at random moments. Each chime comes with a short prompt: stop, soften, breathe.

The 2007 idea

In 2007, when Twitter was new and mostly a place for short status updates, someone had a simple idea for it. They set up an account that would post a "chime" message at random times. People who followed it got the chime in their stream without knowing when it would come. When it arrived, the suggestion was to stop for a moment, let the tension drain away, and breathe.

It was an early example of using a social network as a mindfulness bell, the kind of bell some meditation communities ring at random so that everyone pauses and returns to the present. The account was small and the idea stayed niche, but it was a good one.

What we built

This site keeps the idea and removes the social network. The chime comes from your own browser, so you don't need an account anywhere, and nothing about your pauses leaves your device. The timer:

  • spreads a chosen number of chimes across a time window, or places a set number in each hour;
  • picks a random moment inside each part of the window, so chimes don't bunch together;
  • generates a soft bell sound with the Web Audio API, so there are no audio files to download;
  • shows a short breathing prompt with each chime;
  • can also show a browser notification, if you allow it;
  • remembers your settings in your browser's storage and works offline once the page has loaded.

The guides cover the pause itself, a one-minute breathing practice, calmer social media habits, using chimes at work, and what research does and doesn't say about brief practices.

Who runs it

The site is written and maintained by the Inner Twitter Team, a small independent group. We don't run ads, sell anything, or use analytics.

InnerTwitter.com was relaunched in 2026 under new, independent management. It has no connection to earlier owners of the domain or to anything published on it before. We are also not connected to the person who had the original 2007 idea; we just liked it.

What it is not

  • Not medical advice. Inner Twitter is a general wellbeing tool. It isn't a treatment for anxiety, depression, stress-related illness or any other condition. If those are affecting your life, please talk to a doctor or a licensed mental health professional.
  • Not affiliated with X Corp. The name refers to the 2007 idea. This site has no connection to X (formerly Twitter) and never asks for an X login.
